A STRING OF JEWELS (Bjarne Nybo Jensen Vedbaek)

For more than twenty years we have talked about going to The Savonlinna Opera Festival, but instead we have been travelling around the world to visit opera houses in Australia, Russia, South America, USA and - of course - Europe. We have enjoyed a lot of performances and experienced rain in Verona prior to the first notes of Aida a late evening in the open arena. But this year we decided to go to Finland. We brought our own car and used the ferry from Stockholm and enjoyed the slow sailing through the archipelago towards Helsinki. A jewel.

The next was the arrival to Helsinki and the following round trip in the southeastern part of Finland where we experienced beautiful landscapes, lots of lakes and an almost untouched nature. A fantastic jewel.

But the two opera evenings in Savonlinna were breathtaking. The staging of The Magic Flute and Aida were both marvellous. High quality artists, enormous choirs, beautiful costumes. Al expectations were surpassed - and we did not feel the rain on the second evening. Instead were enjoyed a glass of champagne in the courtyard. More and more jewels. Even the nearby, small restaurant Linnakruovi was a scoop. Serviceminded and qualityfocused are descriptions that fits this place. The trigger for this trip was our 25th anniversary and we could not have chosen a better place to celebrate this date. We both feel rich and wealthy having collected so many jewels on our two weeks trip in Finland. The most precious jewels were collected in Savonlinna - and who knows? Maybe we will be back again soon?
